Lesotho: a whole country above the clouds

The Kingdom in the Sky is a mountain plateau inside South Africa, with pony trekking and tall waterfalls.

The story

A country of high, cold plateaus

Lesotho is a high, mountainous plateau, and visitors can feel the altitude when they first arrive. Wikivoyage says it has about 300 days of sunshine a year.

The rainy season runs from October to April. Snow is possible in winter and can fall on the high mountains in any month.

Practical guide

Plan your Lesotho trip

Check before you go: entry rules depend on your passport. Wikivoyage lists Canada among countries allowed 14 days without a visa and the US among those allowed 90 days, with passport validity of six months. Confirm before travel.

Entry

  • Your passport should be valid for six months and have at least two blank pages.
  • A return or onward ticket may be asked for.
  • Check the official visa rules for your nationality, because stay lengths differ by country.

Seasons

  • Rain falls mostly from October to April, often in severe thunderstorms.
  • Winter nights go below freezing from May to September, and snow is possible.
  • There is skiing at Afriski and Oxbow in winter.

What to see and do

  • Semonkong Falls drops 200 m in a single plunge. You can swim below in summer, and it freezes in winter.
  • Katse Dam, dinosaur footprints near Moyeni and Morija, and rock art, notably in Liphofung Cave.
  • Pony trekking at Malealea, Semonkong or the Basotho Pony Trekking Centre.

Getting around

  • Minibus taxis are the transport of most people. Fares are fixed by the government, but check the price before getting in.
  • Regular taxis have a yellow stripe. Always agree the cost first.

Safety and health

  • It is risky to walk alone in Maseru at night, though the main roads are fine by day.
  • Altitude sickness is possible when you arrive, and skin burns quickly in thin air. Drink plenty of water.
  • Water should be treated before drinking. Hospitals are not of a high standard, and good hospitals exist across the border in South Africa.
  • Wikivoyage reports a very high HIV rate, so ask a travel clinic about precautions.
